Ahead of the far-reaching changes anticipated at the government's Security Industry Authority which we reported in our Winter Newsletter, the SIA has announced a welcome drop in the cost of its licence fees.
From 1st January 2012, the annual cost of individual licences will drop from £245 to £220. Business memberships of the SIA's Approved Contractor Scheme will be trimmed to £15, down from the current £17 per employee. License holders applying for a discounted second licence will pay 50% of the new reduced fee.
As part of its commitment to drive down costs, the SIA estimates the move will save the industry some £3m in the coming year. Chairman Ruth Henig said: "We are very aware of the challenges faced by both businesses and licensed individuals in this difficult climate." Home Office Minister Lynne Featherstone added: "The Government has set a clear challenge to all its agencies and other bodies to ensure they are providing the best possible value for money."
The revised charges will apply to new applicants and those renewing their licences from the start of the New Year. Refunds for those who have already paid their fees into next year will be made on a pro-rata basis. Starting in January, the SIA will send a cheque to each of its eligible licence holders with a covering letter explaining the refund calculation.
